Walking
The Medway Valley Walk runs from Tonbridge through to Allington Lock and therefore is 28 miles (45.2km) long and recognised as a long distance path. Moving along the riverside you'll pass through woodland, hop garden, meadow and farmland. Plus there are 10 navigational locks and many of the pretty villages to see so there are loads of photo opportunities and picturesque places to eat your sandwiches.

Unfortunately the Medway Valley Walk Guidebook is currently out of print but due to the riverside path and additional interpretation, the walk is fairly easy to follow. Additional help can be gained via O.S Maps 136 and 148. See the Explore Kent link for more information on this and other walking routes: http://www.kent.gov.uk/leisure_and_culture/countryside_and_coast.aspx
The Millenium River Park runs along the River Medway for 10km along the tow path from Teston to Cobtree near Allington. It was opened in 2001 as part of the Maidstone millenium celebrations and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Along the route, several fine features, such as the bridges at East Farleigh and Barming, can be seen.
Walking along the river you'll pass the brand new recreational area – Whatman Park– which boasts a variety of special features including treetop walks, a nature trail, adventure playground, Skateboard Park and Riverstage arena for outside entertainment. There is a cafe close by and nice views of the river.
We've created some Spotter Guides to accompany you on your walks along the river. The Heritage Spotters Guide also runs from Tonbridge through to Allington so will accompany you all the way along the Medway Valley Walk. We also have a Wildlife Spotter Guide. In addition, if you don't fancy a linear route (although you can always catch one of the pleasure boat trips part of the way back, or catch the train along the Medway Valley Route) then you can always try one of our Circular Walks. We have created 5 circular walks around the many villages we have mentioned in this website, all around the River Medway area. Click on the Walks and Spotter Guide links either from this page or the home page to easily download your copy for free.
If you enjoy walking in the area and do it regularly, then why not become a voluntary River Warden. Click on the link to the River Warden page for more information.
Don't forget to take your camera while out walking.....you may get a photo of the illusive River Medway otters or a winning photo for our Photography Competition.
