Nettlestead
Nettlestead is located close to Wateringbury and one of its main attractions is the church of St Mary's whose tower has been dated as 13th century.
The windows of the church include 6 in the nave which were built from 1420 onwards an east window which was smashed in the Reformation and the South windows, which were smashed in the Great Storm of 1763.
A gateway from the church to the house and grounds was established in C14th and the garden here use to reach the river itself. At low water levels stones are revealed here which perhaps suggest there was once a ford at this point.
This small village has a population of c.800 and there is one pub in Nettlestead Green, 17th centuary The Hop Pole www.thehopepoleinn.com
