Branbridges

Originally known as 'Brandtbridge' or Brandebridgge', Branbridges is located close to East Peckham.

There was once only a ford in the village but a bridge was later built here in 1325. Nobody was deemed responsible for the upkeep of this bridge but yet it was maintained and in 1606 the bridge was replaced with a more modern bridge with steel beams, concrete and Kentish ragstone.

As can be seen in the other places pages, there are many old bridges along the Medway, such as at Yalding, Teston and Barming. The old bridge at Branbridges was one of the ones along the Medway sketched by Samual Ireland on his travels in the area in 1793.
