Ramsay

One of the founders of the abolition of slavery is buried under a wall of Teston Church.
From 1781-89 the Reverend James Ramsay was Parson of the Parish of Teston. For 19 years he was then a clergyman on the Island of St.Kitts here he criticised the cruel treatment of slaves. On returning to England he continued to campaign for putting a stop to slavery. Rev. James Ramsay was one of the first people to bring the truth about slavery to the attention of the public and parliament, his actions led to personal attack on him by the plantation owners.

The leaders of the abolition movement would meet at Barham Court, among them, William Wilberforce, Thomas Clarkson, and Beilby Porteous.
Olaudah Equiano proclaimed Ramsay one of the Trinity of real "Saints" of the British Anti-Slavery Movement and some claim the abolition of the British Slave Trade owed more to Rev James Ramsey's arguments than any thing else.

Ramsay is buried under the East Wall of Teston Church. His manservant , Nestor, who came with him to Teston from St. Kitts, is commemorated on the wall of the churchyard opposite
