Cricket

Cricket balls were first made in a workshop above the post office in Teston by Thomas Martin. When he retired the business was taken over by Alfred Reader who expanded the business, opening the factory in the 1820's. 1400 balls were produced in a week.
The workers of the Reader factory formed one of the smallest trade unions in the country, ‘The Teston Independent Society of Cricket Ball Makers'.
Cricket has been played in Teston since 1894 when Colonel Charles Ward gave permission to be played behind Barham Court.
