The Malta inn
The Malta Inn is one of four public houses, situated by the river Medway.
They were built in the 18th century and all named after British Naval bases. However records indicate that there have been ‘wet canteens’ on the site since 1760.Two of the four are in, or near, Chatham, but another one, the Gibraltar Inn, is a few yards up the river from the Malta. The Malta Inn is the only one of the four which is still a public house - the Gibraltar Inn close down in 1915 and is now a private house.
